Music Class
Teacher: Mrs. Joy Kaufman Mullen
Mrs. Mullen has been teaching music and enriching the children of St. Dominic School since 1978. She has also been a professional piano teacher for over 40 years. Mrs. Mullen has taught music in the Sullivan County and Kingsport City School systems as well as at St. Paul's Episcopal Preschool. Mrs. Mullen received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Northwestern University. She is certified in vocal and instrumental music for grades K-12. She completed graduate work at East Tennessee State University in sociology and psychology. Mrs. Mullen is also certified from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria in “Orff Schulwerk” music for children, an approach to teaching music created by Carl Orff, a German composer.
The music program at St. Dominic School has benefited greatly from Mrs. Mullen’s vast experience in music. In grades K-2, the music program stresses movement, sound, drama, poetry and group awareness. In grades 3-5, students learn to play the recorder and bell chimes and perform as part of the St. Dominic chorus. There are special music programs throughout the year. An Operetta is performed with the Fifth Grade in the lead roles and the Third and Fourth Grades playing the supporting roles. Also an Epiphany program is presented featuring all of the students at St. Dominic School. There are supplemental musical performances at malls and other locations by the St. Dominic chorus.
Mrs. Mullen is married to Rev. John W. Mullen who served 42 years as Minister of Music at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Since his retirement, John has helped Joy with her classes. This year he is directing the Chorus while she provides the accompaniment. When their four children were young, the entire family performed as a singing group. She has hosted choir tours in European countries and in Alaska. Her hobbies include hiking, reading, and camping. She has “tent camped” in nearly all fifty states.
"My purpose in teaching music at St. Dominic School is to instill a love for music which will enrich each child throughout all of life. Music gives an emotional and intellectual means of expression that can be used both individually and in harmony with others. Music also provides another path to God by enriching spoken worship."
Mrs. Mullin creates the yearly Operetta, using her vast knowledge of music and history. The story is always about an event in the past but she creates a special character for each 5th grade student, with supporting roles from the 3rd and 4th graders. She adds music and dancing to create the “St Dominic Musical”. The students can hardly contain themselves as she unveils the plot each spring. And the dads get the joy of creating the stage for this magical night at the St Dominic Theater.
