Reading Success at
St. Dominic School
· The National Reading Panel reviewed more than 100,000 reading studies in the last decade, and determined the best approach to reading instruction should include:
o Phonemic awareness
o Systematic phonics (alphabetic principle)
o Fluency
o Comprehension
· St. Dominic School is committed to following this recommendation, by choosing our current reading curriculum from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. This includes a Pre-K, “hands-on, minds-on” reading readiness program as well as the K-5th grades reading curriculum.
· St. Dominic School strives to ensure that all of our students will be successful readers by testing every kindergarten and first grade student using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). This test checks for all the important components that the National Reading Panel has determined a child needs to have to read successfully.
